Americano and Mexicano: padel format rules
Americano and Mexicano are the most popular social padel formats. The idea is simple: you play with different partners rather than one, and the winner is decided by total points scored, not by matches won. Everyone plays the same amount and the event fits a known time slot.
Americano: the basic rules
- Partners change every round. The schedule is built so that everyone partners everyone else at least once. For 8 players on 2 courts that is 7 rounds.
- Matches are played to a fixed number of points. Usually 16, 24 or 32 points per match. Every rally counts; there are no games or sets.
- Serve changes every 4 points. Each player serves 4 times in a row, then the serve passes on.
- Points go to the players. If your pair wins 14–10, you and your partner each get 14 points and your opponents 10.
- The leaderboard is the sum of points. The player with the most points across all rounds wins.
There is also Team Americano: pairs stay together, but points are counted the same way.
Mexicano: what is different
Mexicano scores like Americano, but pairs are not fixed in advance: they are formed after every round from the leaderboard. On court 1 the 1st and 4th play the 2nd and 3rd, on court 2 the 5th and 8th play the 6th and 7th, and so on. Matches get closer and the strongest players meet each other.
Tips for organisers
- Plan the time. A 24-point match takes about 15–20 minutes. Seven rounds take roughly two hours with breaks.
- The number of players should divide by 4. If it does not, some players sit out each round and receive the average score of a match — half the points.
- Announce the tie rule in advance. Most apps rank equal points by matches won, then draws, then point difference.
- Show the results to everyone. A live leaderboard on phones or a screen by the courts keeps the suspense until the last round.
